The Challenges Of Being A Woman In Ministry

As Christians, we are called upon to follow God in the direction that He leads us. Psalm 32:8 says, “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.” God wants us to follow him in whatever direction that He leads. He will make the path clear so you can follow Him. 

As the Lord is revealing your path, sometimes that unique plan leads us into a life of ministry. Women face many different challenges when working in ministry. 

Loneliness

Loneliness often seems to be a struggle for anyone working in ministry, but especially for women. You may feel like you are isolated simply because there are not as many other women around you in your church. However, sometimes these feelings of loneliness and isolation are brought on by ourselves. It can feel as if you are the only person who can take on certain tasks. Maybe you feel emotionally overwhelmed because helping people can be hard. Often times you see people struggling to deal with very heavy and difficult issues in their lives. But, the good news is that you are not alone! Make sure you find a good group that is understanding and can help support you. Also make time for people, not just your to-do list.   

Balance

Women in ministry will typically have a more challenging time balancing their work and home lives especially when you have a growing family. Ministry is wonderful. You are able to work with so many different people and watch them as they grow closer to the Lord. But, it is often difficult to balance your home and ministry life simply because of the hours that you put into working. There are the typical hours you work in a week, and then when you add events, outreach, and other activities you may start to feel as if you’re being pulled in many different directions. Sometimes the church will begin to feel like a second family and finding the balance between your work life and home life is key.  

Heartbreak

This was mentioned earlier, however, when you are working in ministry you may see people in their most difficult times in life. People deal with losing loved ones, addiction, depression, and so much more. When you are faced with all of these situations you may become emotionally overwhelmed. It is difficult seeing others go through hard things. Galatians 6:2 states that we should, “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” Make sure that you have a mentor pouring into you and that you are staying close to the Lord.   

Conclusion

We know that being a woman in church leadership can be difficult and you probably feel overwhelmed and overlooked sometimes. We believe you shouldn’t feel alone in ministry. We’ve collaborated with women in leadership all across the country and asked them to share their knowledge and experiences.
